Leading the future of tungsten
Iberian Resources Spain operates La Parrilla mine, one of the world’s most important tungsten mines outside China. In addition to tungsten, the mine contains tin.
It was incorporated in 2009 and operates La Parrilla, Adelaida and Victoria concessions in the municipalities of Santa Amalia (Badajoz) and Almoharín (Cáceres), 300 km southwest of Madrid and 260 km north of Seville.
With an area of 1,000 hectares, the concession was granted on January 18, 1978 for a period of 90 years, with an expiration date of January 2068.
A strategic mine for Europe
On March 25, 2025, both the mine and the ore processing plant have been selected by the European Union as a Strategic Project, under the EU Regulation 2024/1252(Critical Raw Materials Act, CRMA) to guarantee the supply of Tungsten to the EU, given the importance of the deposit.
The La Parrilla project is one of only 7 projects selected, out of a total of 47, considered integral, as not only the extraction project (the mine) but also the production project (the plant) has been selected.

From its origins to becoming a strategic European project
The history of the mine dates back to 1947, when the La Parrilla Spa was opened with medicinal waters due to their iron and arsenic content; owned by the Bonilla family.

In the 1950s, the presence of scheelite (W) and cassiterite (Sn) was discovered in neighboring streams.
A small alluvial operation began to recover mainly tin. Later, and until 1968, the ore was taken from small trenches and wells producing scheelite and cassiterite concentrates.
The Bonilla’s operate the open pit and process 3,000 tons of ore per day to produce high grade WO3 (77-79%) and tin (70%); and roasted arsenopyrite; as a by-product.

La Parrilla was the main producer of tungsten in Spain – about 80% of the market.

The mine was closed in 1989 due to the fall in tungsten prices.

In 2009 Iberian Resources Spain resumed exploration activity, and in 2019 completed the installation of a new ore processing plant that was operational until March 2022; when, derived from the rise in gas prices and for administrative reasons, it temporarily ceased activity.
Currently, the mine is in shutdown with maintenance activities, pending the granting of the relevant permits and authorizations by the Junta de Extremadura and the Confederación Hidrográfica del Guadiana.
